LABOUR MARKET IMPACT ASSESSMENT (LMIA)
The Meaning of LMIA
The Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) is a process that Canadian employers must undergo when looking to hire foreign workers. It can take anywhere from two weeks to two months to receive approval from Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) to fill vacant positions with temporary foreign workers (TFWs). The LMIA serves as the primary stage in the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP), through which companies demonstrate that they have a labour and skills shortage, that Canadians or permanent residents are not available, and that hiring foreign workers will ultimately benefit the Canadian labour market.
Employers can use the LMIA to fill both low-skilled and high-skilled positions, and as many roles as needed, provided they receive approval from the ESDC. The LMIA process and its various steps are discussed below.
