In 2019, 27,000 sponsorship applications for parents and grandparents have been accepted by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). In 2018, 17,000 respectively. In 2017 - 10,000 applications.
Not only the cap on sponsoring parents has increased, but also an application process was modified significantly.
Sponsoring Parents To Canada Process
To sponsor parents to Canada, sponsors and parents have to go through the process that has six main stages, particularly:

Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) invites potential sponsors to submit a complete application in the same order they receive the interest to sponsor forms online.
Get the correct parent sponsorship application package. There are two applications that must be submitted together, not later than 60 days after an invitation to sponsor parents to Canada was received. The two applications are – sponsor’s application to become a sponsor and parents or grandparents application for permanent residence.
Pay government fees for an application to sponsor parents. It will comprise of:
- sponsorship fee ($75)
- principal applicant processing fee ($475)
- principal applicant’s spouse processing fee ($500)
- the Right of Permanent Residence Fee ($490 per person), and
- the biometrics fee ($85 per person).
Sponsoring parents to Canada will require that a sponsorship application be received by IRCC not later than 60 days from an invitation. The specific deadline will be provided in the invitation.
Parents or grandparents will need to take medical exams, give biometrics, and provide police certificates when requested by IRCC during the processing of their sponsorship application.

Parents Sponsorship Processing Time – 20 - 24 months
IRCC process parents and grandparents sponsorship applications within 20-24 months. Processing time starts the day IRCC receives a complete parent sponsorship application and ends when they make a decision. It may take longer than 24 months if an application is not complete.
